Jakub Kusmeiruk working hard and getting attention

7'4" Jakub Kusmieruk averaged only about 3.5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots a game for Coach Tony Martin's John Carroll Patriots as a junior in 2006-2007, but a number of top college hoops programs, including Georgetown University, are interested in the towering Polish exchange student who just completed his second season of American high school basketball.

MdVarsity.com. was on hand to see Kusmieruk's varsity debut in a tournament at St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, Maryland, and it was clear then that the young polish center, who had only played organized basketball for six months before arriving in America, needed to work on his skills, conditioning, and to adjust to the speed, athleticism, and competitiveness of American basketball.

Kusmieruk averaged about 3 points and 4 rebounds as a sophomore for the Patriots. Coach Martin told MdVarsity.com last year that he was "... pleased with Jakub's progress" his first year at John Carroll. "Jakub hadn't played a lot of basketball before he got here and he has had to adjust to living here, not just as a basketball player, but as a student, and socially. I think he has made good progress. It takes big men longer to develop, particularly seven-foot-plus kids. He is a great kid and a hard worker, his best basketball is ahead of him. It might not be next year, but he is going to be a very good player in time. He has some skills and he is a pretty good athlete for a kid his size. He is a hard worker, he wants to get better, which is important."

Kusmieruk's lack of productivity and experience notwithstanding, a number of major colleges are actively recruiting the towering Polish center, who has grown to 7'4" 285 pounds since he first arrived at John Carroll.

Among the more interested schools is NCAA Final Four entry Georgetown University. "Right now, the two schools that have been interested the longest and showing the most interest are Georgetown University and Central Florida. I'm not saying that Georgetown thinks that Jakub can be another Roy Hibbert (the Hoya's outstanding 7'2" junior center), but they are really intrigued by his potential. We took Jakub down to Georgetown last fall to an open gym and he played against Hibbert and Roy said it was one of the first times he had played against someone taller than him. We hope to get Jakub down to Georgetown a few times this spring to practice."

In order to prepare Kusmieruk for his senior year at John Carroll and to get him ready for college basketball, Coach Martin and Coach Macri have instituted a rigorous, comprehensive off-season training program. "Jakub is working out six days a week, two to three hours a day, on a demanding program to improve his speed, agility, core strength, quickness and overall conditioning and stamina. We are about 5-6 weeks into it and you can already see the results in his improved athleticism and conditioning. We are going to go through the spring, summer, and fall. We are also working on his skills, though, really, in terms of his ability to catch the ball, pass, shoot, see the floor, Jakub has a lot of skills already. But he needs to get in better shape, be able to get up and down the floor better and be able to rebound, block shots, and finish offensively the way that a player his size should. He is making great progress so far. He has great hands, his foot work is improving," said assistant coach Macri.

Although the primary focus this off-season for Kusmieruk will be conditioning, including a week at The Pro Training Center with Coach David Thorpe early this summer, Kusmieruk will be playing some organized basketball on the summer AAU/camp circuit. "Jakub will play in a few AAU events this summer with the Baltimore Select AAU team and at Five Star Camp," said Coach Macri this week.

"I think that he (Kusmieruk) will really be greatly improved and have a much bigger impact for us as a senior, Coach Martin told MdVarsity.com last month. "I think Jakub will really be an outstanding college player and I really believe that if he keeps working hard, he will definitely be a pro someday."

MDVarsity.com recognizes Baltimore Freshman Josh Selby

Photo: Josh SelbyThe website MDVarsity.com released their profile of John Carroll freshman guard Josh Selby today. The website, a part of the Rivals.com network, focuses on recruiting and high school sports in the state of Maryland, profiled Selby as part of their Freshman of Influence series.

We've seen it before. Chris Wright. Keith Bogans. And now The John Carroll School's talented 6'2" freshman guard Josh Selby. They arrived in high school with big reputations, created a buzz and backed it up from the opening tip of their first season of varsity basketball, as freshmen playing ahead of their time.

A strong, extraordinarily athletic 6'2" 175 pound 15 year old freshman, Selby has lived up to the advance hype as he averaged 16 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Patriots as a freshman. He started all 35 of John Carroll's 36 games this season.

"Josh is just an incredible athlete. He is very explosive, quick, a great leaper," Coach Martin told MDVarsity.com. "He can do 360 dunks, he is just an amazing athlete. But what really separates him from most players is his competitiveness- he is a great competitor. He will do whatever it takes to win games. He is a winner. He wants to be the best player he can be and he wants the team to succeed, win."

"Josh's skills are obvious. He has great ability and skills, he has a great handle and he can really see the floor," said Coach Martin. "I don't think I have EVER seen a high school freshman who can see the floor as well as Josh does- he has great court vision and court awareness. He is a scorer, but he is also a true point guard and a great floor leader."

According to JCS Assistant Coach Anthony Macri, Maryland, Georgetown, UConn, North Carolina and Kentucky are among the high D-I colleges already expressing interest in Selby.

Though Selby is already a prodigious talent, Coach Martin said that his gifted freshman is still working hard on being "game ready" when he reaches the college ranks in three years.

Clearly, the John Carroll School hoops program is on the rise and Selby will be an elite player whose development and recruitment will be closely watch the next three years.

12U Team wins Championship at Spring Fling

Phot: 12U Team

Coach Ken and his 12U team ran up against New York's finest a the Spring Fling. The tournament was hosted by Seton Hall. The team swept through pool play winning by 20 or more in 2 of the three pool games. Afterwards, the playoffs started and the team went up against the toughest teams NY had to offer, the Gauchos and the host Playaz. In the final game vs. The Playaz, Select went up by ten early and never relinquished that lead. By the middle of the second half the margin went to 15 and eventually 20. The refs stopped the game with 3 minutes left due to the slaughter rule. Kenny Solomon won MVP honors. This is the teams 4th Championship in as many tournaments. Great job Coach Ken and the 12U team!!!

Dissaponting weekend at Seton Hall for the Select 17U team

The Select 17U team was looking forward to kicking off the season with a finals appearance at The Spring Fling that was held at Seton Hall University this weekend. Pool play was tough with Team New Jersey, Albany City Rocks and the Long Island Allstars rounding off the pool. After beating the LI Allstars on Friday night, Select was loking to take out Albany City, even with there 7'2 nationally ranked center. Select loss a tough one 60-64 after Select missed a game tieing lay up with 1 minute left in the game; eventually loosing by 4. Afterwards the Select team looked to salvage the weekend by beating Team New Jersey and going home with a respectable 2-1 pool play record. This did not happen after the dissapointing melt down of a 10 point lead with 4 minutes remaining with careless turnovers and horrible defense. Team New Jersey eventually tied the game and won by one point. Select will look to bounce back next weekend at the Charlie Weber Spring Fling.

Strong earns 1st Team All Metro

Photo: Omar StrongThis select standout had a great season helping Douglas win 20 straight games before finishing 22-2 and falling to eventual Class 2A state champion Randallstown in the North regional final. This 5'9 guard is one of the toughest the city has to offer; he is fearless on the offensive end and plays tough man to man full court defense.

Randallstown coach Kim Rivers said it was imperative for his team to keep Strong from penetrating off his dribble in order to defeat the Ducks in the regional. It may have been the only time all season that a team was able to stop Strong, who was scoreless in the first half, but got loose for 19 in the second half.

Strong was tough for most opponents to defend because of his quickness, athleticism, accuracy from the perimeter and pull-up jumpers. Strong will continue to work on his game running along side Josh Selby for the Select 17U team this spring and summer.

He averaged 19.8 points, 4.3 assists and two steals in his second varsity season. Great job O!!!!

Selby earns 1st Team All Harford County

Photo: Josh SelbySelby countinues to grow as a player leading the John Carroll team to a great season going 28-8. This was a breakout season for John Carroll who is looking to move up to the A Conference the Baltimore Catholic League next year. This is a young team led by Selby. Selby helped his team with his exceptional leadership skills while mostly playing point guard throughout the season. Selby made first team honors while playingin the Monteverde Tournament in Florida. Selby will continue working on his game this summer playing with the 17U Select team. Great job Josh!!!

Pettiway earns Player of the Year Honors in Harford County

Photo: Jeff PettiwayThis former select standout point guard is adept at passing as well as shooting. He led the county in scoring and assists for much of the season, finishing with averages of 19 points and six assists. Pettiway is a mild mannered leader on the court that never looses his cool and always looking to lead, the 5-foot-9 senior is whom Joppatowne always looked to in times of trouble. Pettiway, who is undecided about college, impressed the select coaches and former teammates with his work ethic during last years spring/summer campaign. This led to a successful senior season in which he had the confidence to lead his Joppatowne team. Congratulations Pettiway!!!

Barksdale earns 2nd Team All Baltimore City

Photo: Eric BarksdaleEric is one of the toughest players to ever put on a select jersey. Following his brothers footsteps, former Select standout, Maurice Barksdale, Eric made it happen for the Dunbar Poets this year. It was a tough season for Eric, he lost his Coach and had no real size to help him in the paint. Throughout all of this turmoil, he continued to lead the Poets to a great season eventually loosing in the State Championship game vs. New Town. Great job Eric!!!
